If business ownership were listed on LinkedIn like a traditional job opening, I wonder how many people would realize they’re already qualified.

Most people assume business owners are different.
Not all business owners got there with the next great innovative product or service. The are over 36.2 million small businesses in the USA (30 million are owner operated) Source: SBA. In 2024 about 830,000 business owners plugged into an already proven and established business formats.
Many of those owners recognized they had transferable skills and a willingness to explore a different path.
I meet with people every day that assume they “aren’t entrepreneurial”. Let’s test that assumption by imagining business ownership had a job posting.

When you look at the posting this way, it starts to sound less like a description of a business owner and more like a description of many successful professionals.
Professionals don’t put away their skills because they become business owners. They use those skills to solve problems, manage people, navigate uncertainty and make decisions every day.
Many people spend years building skills that could transfer into ownership without ever recognizing it.
Why?
Because most of us evaluate our careers through a single lens and don’t ask the right questions when they wonder “What’s next?”
Most of us start by asking what the next job could be. But what if that isn’t the most important question?
What if your experience has positioned you for something more?
What if the skills you’ve spent years developing are assets that could create additional options?
I’m not suggesting everyone can or should become a business owner.
Just like not everyone belongs in the same career, business ownership isn’t the right fit for everyone.

But I do believe more people should evaluate all of their options before deciding what’s next.
Too often, people move from one job to another without ever considering what else their experience may have positioned them for.
As a Career Ownership Coach®, that’s where I come in.
I help people step back, look at the skills they’ve built, the problems they’ve solved, and the results they’ve delivered, then evaluate what opportunities those assets may create.
Sometimes business ownership is part of the conversation.
Sometimes it isn’t.
The goal isn’t to reach a predetermined answer.
It’s to make an informed decision.
Along the way, the question changes.
It’s no longer:
“Could I ever be a business owner?”
It’s:
“Why did I assume I couldn’t?”
Maybe the better question isn’t whether you’re qualified.
Maybe it’s whether you’ve ever taken the time to evaluate what your career has positioned you for.
